palek north was born in dallas, texas to marilyn fischer-north and camilla north. this wasn't something that ever bothered him, but throughout his childhood and adolescence he was commonly referred to as the boy with two moms, or any other variety of derogatory references to homosexual women. many a time the boy came home with a fat lip or bloody nose after defending his mothers but being picked on never really hurt him as much as people wanted it to. if anything it just encouraged him to stand up for people that were being picked on and it helped him view the world in a bit of a different light. palek was never the type of kid that liked to pick on others and really just spent most of his time defending the little guy. but when he wasn't standing up for what he thought was right, he was playing with his friends and his cousins and playing baseball.
starting at a very early age, baseball became one of palek's passions. the little boy showed a lot of promise even as early as his teeball years. when he was old enough he started playing on a traveling team. with the encouragement of his mothers he traveled all over the state of new jersey playing against the very best teams in his age range. his love for baseball lasted all the way to high school. as a freshman he was the starting varsity pitcher. pal played varsity baseball all four years of high school but in the last game of the regular season he tore his rotator cuff while pitching. in spite of the torn tendon he managed to pitch the last pitch of the game but it was a wild pitch that was hit back at him. the line drive caught him in the arm and snapped his wrist as a result. it was the last time he played a game for the school. the team went on to state without him but lost the game in the last inning when the backup pitcher threw the wrong pitch and allowed the other team to score two runs. it was the first year since palek had gotten there that the team hadn't won state.
palek had two surgeries on his shoulder and one on his wrist by the time he was eighteen and it was very clear that his career in baseball was over. he spent the end of his senior year and most of the following summer moping around, feeling miserable over the fact that he wasn't going to be able to play baseball anymore, but he didn't let it keep him down. instead he focused his attention on getting better to the best of his ability. just because he couldn't play pro ball anymore, like he planned, didn't mean he couldn't teach other people how to play or still play for fun. as part of his physical therapy his moms bought him a guitar so that he could regain the use of his fingers after his surgery. playing guitar quickly became his newest passion. it was a slow process, learning the chords and being able to get passed the pain that came from playing them. as he gained strength back in his arm and his wrist it got easier and he learned faster. by the middle of his freshman year of college he was playing whole songs.
because he was unable to play baseball, palek lost his scholarship to louisiana state and instead he ended up at a school in new york. although his plans had been put on the back burner he made the best of a bad situation by taking a broad arrange of classes so he could find something he loved as much as he loved baseball. he took guitar lessons, and was a teacher's assistant for a class on american sign language. in addition to all of that he took anthropology and literature classes and he turned his interests from baseball to his education. while he was there he met a few people who were interested in starting a band with him. although he wasn't the best at playing his guitar he started out as vocals and slowly worked his way in the direction of playing guitar in the band as well. with all of those things going on in his life he managed to distract himself from baseball and eventually to work his way out of his depression.
palek spent the entire summer before his second year playing umpire to little league baseball games and teaching pitching lessons at the ymca. he also spent a lot of time hanging out with his cousins and his friends. palek even got a job just to pass the time. it was his intention for it only to be a summer job but he enjoyed working at the little music store so much that he hadn't yet found the heart to quit it. now, at 19, palek is just entering his second year at the college. in his free time he plays small gigs at local clubs on the weekends and he works most afternoons in a little locally owned music store.
